Women Firsts! 2023 celebrates women in many fields—art, law and justice, sports, science and education, and others—the first women who have broken down barriers in this country such as:

· Maria Miller, the American scientist who was the first to map a new comet in 1847, and Kizzmekia Corbett, the first African American woman to lead an NIH vaccine-development team—for the Moderna COVID vaccine;

· Harriet Quimby, the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license, and Katherine Johnson, the first Black mathematician at NASA, and the mathematician who charted John Glenn’s path for flying to the moon; and

· Frances Perkins, the first female member of the President’s Cabinet, and Tye Leung Schulze, the first Chinese American woman to vote—that was in California in 1912, 8 years before the passage of the 19th Amendment.
We honor American women in this book and in spirit the many other women around the world who have broken barriers. The images and sketches of women in Women Firsts! 2023 should inspire us all.

Women Firsts! is a planner. It is intended as a tool to help inspire and set goals—and record our plans and progress over the course of 2023. The fact is that much of our past progress is under attack today. Women must continue the struggle to protect the vote—especially for people of color and youth—as well as reproductive and other rights. We must each work to ensure that hard-won rights are restored and protected for future generations.
