Running the Gauntlet is a collection of 31 verses, written in the style of haiku (5-7-5 syllables) followed by a chorus. Each haiku highlights hazards that some young men face. The Introduction, all the haiku, and the chorus, could be read by a principal young male voice. The second chorus, by two voices, the principal, plus one; the third by three voices, the principal, plus two; the fourth, the principal plus three, until haiku number 13, when one chorus member drops out (goes to jail). Chorus members drop off as the tale continues (as young men die or become incarcerated) until the end, leaving a sole survivor, with the last haiku and chorus read by one voice.
