Lucas Baker is a teenager who is rendered depressed and repressed by life, having spent a difficult childhood with his mother, Jennifer. After his mother’s death, he faces various struggles to continue living his life in San Francisco. After purposelessly wandering around the city because of homelessness, he starts working as a simple manual worker at a restaurant. All those around him consider Lucas to be a week, lackadaisical coward who is incapable of accomplishing even the most routine, daily tasks in life. As a result of this, he can establish lasting connections with only one or two individuals in total.
Not having a strong source of support in life, Lucas ends up harmed and wronged by different people in different situations. And, in his subconscious, he develops a hatred for all the people and wishes to rise to high positions one day so as to take revenge for the frustrations and injustices he experienced. Over time, he encounters a supernatural being named Rajeem which is in fact the Satan and looks just like Lucas. That is when Lucas realizes nobody can see or hear Rajeem except for him.
Rajeem tries to capture and possess his mind and body with tempting offers and several prophecies about the events that lie ahead. Lucas initially resists him; but, as he reflects on his utterly bitter and miserable past, he gradually gravitates toward Rajeem and ultimately surrenders his very soul to him.
Bit by bit, his personality starts changing. From a repressed, depressed, and timid person, he turns into a bold, highly confident man. His sudden change of personality – and the accompanying prophecies assisted by Rajeem – do astonish everyone. As he gradually becomes the center of attention among those around him, he decides to take revenge on all the people who wronged him in the past.
The pleasure of being in the spotlight and the subsequently gained wealth and fame cause his repressed feelings and psychological complexes to surface, leading him to gradually disregard numerous moral norms and transform – from a simple, fearful boy – into an arrogant and daring, albeit hedonistic and overindulgent, individual.
Father Anthony – the archbishop at church of their town – notices his behavior, so does Sophia who is the accountant of the restaurant wherein he worked before his change of personality. Therefore, they make great efforts to make Lucas aware of the mistakes in his behavior. Lucas’ rebellious spirit, however, is under Rajeem’s influence and simply rejects them.
To justify his behavior and following Rajeem’s orders, Lucas reintroduces himself as somebody with sovereign senses. Under his guidance, atheistic and nontheistic ideologies start spreading. And, with the help of Rajeem’s powers, he eliminates most of those who caused him great agony before, thus becoming an ambitious, although corrupt and decadent, person. In addition to joining the Democratic Party of the United States and gaining the trust of its high-ranking members, Lucas gets elected as the mayor of his city at the early age of twenty-two.
But, not all things go smoothly for Lucas. On the way to seize his desired opportunities, his soul and psyche are repeatedly damaged by Rajeem. In order to further climb the social ladder, however, he encounters many obstacles set up by different sociopolitical entities including even churches which try to ruin his image by claiming Lucas is a devil-worshipper. Nevertheless, each time, he is able to defeat them with the aid of Rajeem.
Thus Lucas becomes so immersed in gaining social status and credibility – with Rajeem’s assistance – that, every time he tries to separate himself from the web in which Rajeem has trapped him, he simply cannot do so! No longer does he feel any peace in his life. Eventually, he finds himself at a crossroads between returning to his past or continuing a life brimful of tensions and psychological warfare orchestrated by Rajeem.
