As I watched my son fall deeper and deeper into a pit, I knew to do nothing else, but cry out to my Abba in prayer. Our son, Alex, had always been the son his father and I didn’t have to worry too much about, which was quite different from his brother, who had been diagnosed with early onset bipolar disorder at the age of 11. By the age of 15, Alex had intrinsic motivation to do well at anything he tried. He was kind, thoughtful, loving, and very protective of me. He was a good student and a leader in our church. That was until November 2010 when everything changed. My book is a memoir of the excruciatingly painful journey our lives took over the next ten years and how God sustained us every single step of the way. It begins with Alex’s immense guilt after a friend’s suicide, which led him to feel responsible for friends who were left behind. This, unfortunately, turns horribly wrong as we learn that Alex is using drugs, selling drugs, and even participating in the manufacturing of drugs. As his anger, depression, and drug use increase, his risky behavior intensifies. This leads to his disappearing from home for weeks at a time, practically dropping of school, and completely running from God. And when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, Alex began having psychotic episodes. This book is meant to tell the story of how God is abundantly good in the throes of a generational spiritual battle. It is meant to encourage other families that are dealing with mental illness and drug use from their loved ones. It is meant to be an example of how the unrelenting grace, mercy, and provision of God can overcome any battle we face. It is a story of miracles.
