The author contextualizes the purportedly philanthropic work of a rich family within the framework of capitalist maneuvering in a colonial economy masquerading as charity, against a backdrop of corruption, sexual excess among presumed celibate monks at St. John’s Abbey in Colleveille, Minnesota, and clerical abuse.
