1910 was a time of change for America detailed with a rich cultural history that was still developing. The south was still overcoming its problems with the reformation of slavery. Louisville Kentucky was no different. Jannie Briar, a teenage Negro store clerk, is placed in an abusive situation with the church Deacon Mr. Milton Douglas. She only shares her troubles with her sister Lullabelle who prides herself on being a certified sinner. Cove McKendon from Canada is visiting his aunt and uncle in Louisville when he finds Jannie in trouble. Will he save her?
