“There Is Confusion” written by Jessie Redmon Fauset (1882-1961) in 1924, is the first of four novels in which she examines the experience of being black and middle-class while contending with the challenges of American racism in a non-stereotypical way.
The novel, set in Philadelphia and New York City in the early 20th century, follows the interwoven lives of three friends, Joanna, Maggie, and Peter as they pursue their dreams, navigate love and grapple with the struggles of their time.
“There Is Confusion” is a significant 20th century work of African American literature. The themes of ambition and success, love and relationships, racial prejudice and discrimination, class and social mobility, rage, hope and pride, prevalent throughout the novel are as relevant today as they were over a hundred years ago.
