The Christmas Gift and two other short stories by Grazia Deledda

A charming introduction to the work of world-renowned writer Grazia Deledda. Previously hard to find in English translation, these three short stories convey a childlike sense of innocence and wonder, and although they’re suitable for children, they’re not necessarily children’s stories. To fans of her more well-known novels, they offer a fresh perspective on her enduring talent as a storyteller.

Of the three stories, “The Christmas Gift” seems the most typical of Deledda’s more familiar work, expressly set in Sardinia, reflecting on the simple lives of shepherds, and expressing a faith in God.

“It’s Starting to Snow” is a vignette told from a little girl’s point of view (Deledda often drew inspiration from childhood memories, including stories told by various visitors to her father’s home) and speaks to the awe of childhood, when an imminent snowstorm portends fearful excitement and drama.

“Maybe It Would’ve Been Better… ” is something of a fairy tale, or, perhaps more accurately, a fable, and as such, the boy’s fateful choice conveys a moral.

These three stories are easily read in a single sitting (they total roughly 4,400 words) and can serve equally well as an enjoyable introduction to Deledda or as a source of additional insight to readers already familiar with the Nobel laureate’s work.
